Heating Repairs – It’s Cold, Don’t Let The Dog Out!

Category: Heating

Heating RepairsMany breeds of dogs love the outdoors in the wintertime. Long haired dogs such as Alaskan Malamute, American Eskimo Dog, Chow Chow, Great Pyrenees, Siberian Husky, Norwegian Elkhound, and more are well tolerated for the cold.

Extra body fat and double layer, thicker coats make these breeds suitable for the cold weather we experience here in our beautiful state of Illinois.

These dogs are suited for outdoor living in your IL home. They can tolerate freezing weather well, only requiring a sheltered space away from the wet if for long lengths of time.

At Standard Heating & Cooling, we love dogs and think there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book in front of the fireplace and inviting our pal to climb up to keep us warm.

In fact, the history of many cold weather dog breeds began with man training these wonderful animals to rescue humans who find themselves stuck in freezing conditions.

Whether it was guarding livestock or search and rescue, dogs bred for cold weather have helped us for thousands of years in extreme climates. The St. Bernard is one such well-known cold weather rescue animal.

The thing about dogs is that in the beginning they are puppies. Puppies tend to chew on whatever they can get their teeth on, and with most of these breeds living outdoor lives, well, they can chew up anything they have access to.

It wasn’t long ago that we heard a story about a lady who was looking at homes to rent. She visited one of the homes on her list and was really excited about it because it had everything she’d been looking for…with one exception.

When she went around to the backyard to take a look, she was flabbergasted. The whole home was gorgeous, leaving nothing to be desired as far as she was concerned, however upon entering the backyard area, her hopes fell flat.

Before her stood a wooden deck and patio area that was built next to the home, situated a little bit away from the outside heating condenser unit. All the wood near and around the deck and framing of the home were completely annihilated by puppy teeth. Unfortunately, the last tenant’s pet had needed something to teethe on and used whatever it could find nearby.

The heating unit was also chewed up on several sides. A huge hole was torn away in the fins of the condenser which meant very poor air circulation for the unit. In fact, the fins were so destroyed they had to be replaced.

When the heating fins aren’t kept separated as they should be, air cannot flow through. It’s important for you to get proper airflow in the condenser so you don’t burn out the compressor or other parts. The fins are made of very flexible aluminum and can easily bend if pressed.

Normally, the fins can be re-combed straight, but when they’ve experienced extensive damage from such things as pet chewing, there won’t be any chance of saving them.

Unfortunately for the potential renters, the problem hadn’t been noticed or repaired. But for the rest of us, it’s a lesson learned about our lovable pets. They can and could destroy your outdoor heating unit, causing your unit to eventually fail. In the mean time, the energy bill will rise.

If you have a gorgeous cold weather pet that loves to be outdoors and they’re young enough to chew, it would behoove you to protect any areas that your puppy can reach for teething purposes.

And please, if you have a pet not bred for the cold, keep them safe and warm in your home during wintertime. You’ll get much thanks and gratitude for it.
